Enhancing Matchday Magic: Fan Engagement Activations for the SFA

At Social Jungle, we pride ourselves on creating immersive fan experiences across a variety of sports, including football, golf, American football, and netball. As a team of sports enthusiasts, we’re always excited to take on new projects that bring fans closer to the action. This excitement was palpable when we received a brief from the Scottish Football Association (SFA) to engage fans at the Scotland Women’s National Team match against Hungary.

The Brief

The Scottish Football Association (SFA) approached us to enhance fan engagement at the Scotland Women’s National Team match against Hungary. The SFA’s Marketing and Partnerships team sought out interactive, memorable activations to energise the fan zone before kick-off and at halftime. They were looking for highly shareable and fun experiences that would boost anticipation and build connections among fans, both in the stadium and online.

The Solution

After an intensive ideation process, our creative team presented several activation concepts, designed to not only entertain fans but also support data capture for future SFA marketing. The SFA selected two standout activations: Football Player Card and Catch the Player, both of which added vibrant, interactive elements to the fan zone.

Football Player Card Experience

This activation featured green screen technology, enabling fans to create personalised player cards featuring their own photos and names. Each fan could select one of four custom templates, designed to match Scotland Women’s Team branding and aligned with key football positions—goalkeeper, defender, midfielder, and striker. Each template included skill ratings such as dribbling, tackling, and shooting, tailored to the chosen position.

Fans chose their preferred position and entered their name on a touchscreen before posing for their photo. Instantly, our software generated a unique digital player card, displayed on-screen with options for fans to share via text, email, or even print a keepsake to take home. This activation gave fans a tangible memento, while also encouraging social sharing across platforms.

Catch the Player Game

In addition to the player card experience, we developed Catch the Player, a fast-paced interactive game for fans to enjoy. The game, displayed on a large touchscreen, challenged fans to catch images of Scotland Women’s Team players as they appeared on-screen. Each successful “catch” earned points, with fans competing for high scores displayed on a live leaderboard. The game’s competitiveness and visual appeal made it a focal point in the fan zone, drawing steady crowds and creating an energetic atmosphere.

The Results

Both activations were a resounding success, engaging fans throughout the event and meeting the SFA’s objectives for interactivity and excitement. The two experiences not only captivated attendees but also supported SFA’s fan engagement goals by capturing valuable data to strengthen future marketing efforts.

Key highlights included:

  • Over 100 personalised player cards created, with many fans sharing online, driving an additional reach of over 3,000.

  • Nearly 100 new fan data records captured, expanding SFA’s database.

  • Both activations remained highly popular and in constant use before kick-off and during halftime, maximising fan engagement across the matchday experience.

Feedback from the client was overwhelmingly positive, and the success of these activations has already prompted planning for future collaborations to further enhance fan zones at SFA events.
