Custom Letter Build For FLY Open Air

The Brief

The team behind popular music festival, FLY Open Air, came to us as they needed new giant lettering to be made, which would be displayed on the grounds of Hopetoun House, the venue for the music festival.

During the briefing stage, the client mentioned that the letters were to be 6ft tall, sturdy, and have a sort of metallic finish to them. The letters also had to be constructed in such a way that they could be firmly secured to the ground.

The Solution

Our production team got straight to work, firstly producing sketches to show the proposed dimensions of the letters, as well and outlining the materials and methods which would be used to construct the letters. Following that, a CAD drawing was created to present a more formal representation of the letters.

Upon sign-off, construction work got underway. The team began by cutting sheets of wood to the shape of the letters, using our in-house CNC machine, ensuring the letters were an exact match to the FLY typeface.

Once all the pieces had been cut, it was a case of assembling them, using various wooden fixing points to give the letters as much stability as possible.

After assembly, the process of finishing the letters began. Each letter was fully sanded to not only ensure a smooth finish, but also to aide in the painting process. A black base coat was applied to the letters before the application of metallic silver paint, to give them the desired final finish.

Once the letters were complete, our team began the task of creating the base for each of them. A crucial part of the build, each base was firmly secured to the foot of each letter, with holes in the corners to provide the means of fixing them into the ground. The bases were then completed with a covering of artificial grass, so they would tie in with the surroundings in which they were to be erected.

 The Results

As you can see from our images, the results were spectacular. The letters were in-line with FLY’s brand, were incredibly impactful, and were a hit with festival-goers.

It’s hard to put an exact number on how many photos in which the letters featured, but from a quick search across social media platforms, we can see countless images, proving the letters to be a huge hit.

And not only were they a success for this year’s festival, but they’ll be ready to do it all over again next year, providing more wonderful photo opportunities for those attending the festval.
